TITLE : FABRICATION OF HYBRID MMC (AL-SIC-B4C) AND EVALUATION OF MECHANICAL AND MACHINABILITY CHARACTERISTICS
ABSTRACT :

Hybrid (MMC) metal matrix composite are materials which combine a tough metallic matrix with two different hard ceramic reinforcements. Engineering industries such as Automobile, Aerospace, Sports goods, Industrial plants use the hybrid composite materials for their superior mechanical properties. Metal composite in general possess certain superior properties like low density, greater modulus of elasticity, greater hardness, high specific stiffness and high specific strength, controlled coefficient of thermal expansion, increased fatigue resistance and superior dimensional stability at elevated temperature. In this direction, the aluminium hybrid composite is fabricated using stir casting method. 10% by weight of SiC particles with an average size of 45 . m along with 5% by weight of B4C particulates of an average size of 40 . m were reinforced in to the molten aluminium alloy of designation Al 356. The hardness, chemical composition and the micro-structure of the hybrid composite were investigated. Turning operation is conducted in a medium duty lathe to study the machinability characteristics like surface roughness and tool wear using SEM images.
